What can I expect from my first singing lesson?
For a lot of people, a first singing lesson can be an exciting but daunting experience. My personal belief is that all people can sing and with a few tips, 99% of people can sing in tune and beautifully. My goal in our first lesson is to figure out what you want to get out of lessons and to make you feel comfortable using your voice in this new environment. With that in mind, here are a few typical elements of a first singing lesson:
1. Vocal warm-up
Every lesson will start with a vocal warm-up. Like a warm-up before exercising, a vocal warm-up increases blood flow to the voice and helps to optimise singing and avoid injury. In practice, vocal warmups involve making a variety of sounds to exercise all different parts of the voice. Think different vowel sounds and sounds like vocal slides and sirens.
2. Technical work (including breathing and posture)
Here’s where things get a bit more technical. After we’ve warmed-up your voice, we focus on some things to make the sound even better. It’s where we might look in detail at things like breathwork, posture and how to use the different registers of your voice. Sidenote - some people LOVE heavy technical detail, others not so much. It’s up to you how much we get into the nitty-gritty of technique. My goal is to tailor the lessons to your interests and learning style.
3. Repertoire work - song or music of your choice
In this part of the lesson, we start to look at repertoire or songs. You might have a song in mind that you’d like to sing, or otherwise I can suggest something that might suit you. We’ll sing through the song at a pace that suits you, stopping to work on technical aspects as we go.
Other things to note:
As we sing through, I play the piano to accompany your singing.
I can either sing along with you as we go (this helps some people feel more comfortable) or I can refrain from singing so that you can hear yourself better.
It’s not an audition! There’s no need to be nervous and I guarantee you after a few lessons you will forget that you ever felt any nerves about your singing lessons.
